Boobs vs Boobs

May 14, 2007

hooters.gifMark this down as RETARDED.

The people of Rancho Bernardo, CA have fought to keep a Hooter’s restaurant from receiving a liquor license. Probably an attempt to keep the restaurant from establishing their business in the area. This tactic has also been tried in Waco (surprise).

People in the town complained to the CA Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, asking that they withhold Hooter’s liquor license, but a judge has ruled that the state cannot withhold the license. However, here was the reasoning of those who opposed a liquor license for Hooter’s:

Opponents argued in court that the restaurant – whose official slogan is “Delightfully Tacky Yet Unrefined” – sits a stone’s throw from a church, would become a magnet for crime and wasn’t a good fit for the community. They said alcohol would exacerbate crime because of the provocative nature of the restaurant, which critics have accused of promoting a fraternity house atmosphere.

Come on. Hooter’s would become a crime magnet? How many Hooter’s have you heard of with crime problems or having caused crime? None to my knowledge. Just more fundies attempting to force their religious views on the rest of the public (notice the Hooter’s is within a “stone’s throw” from a church. Boo hoo).

Besides, do these wholesome girls look like they would exacerbate crime?

I didn’t think so either.

How about we allow people to legally serve alcohol and conduct their business without threats from myopic moralists. If people do not wish to have the Hooter’s in their community, they can voice their protest by not frequenting the establishment. And if the market turns sour, because they are serving booze and exposing flesh, so be it.

Apparently, Responsible Parenting Works

May 14, 2007

According to a new study, children whose parents allow them to drink in moderation at home are less likely to become problem drinkers.

A survey of 10,000 British teenagers aged 15-16 found 75 per cent had drunk alcohol, but those who were first introduced to it at home were less likely to binge-drink, drink frequently or drink in public places.

Imagine that. Responsible parents who teach their children to behave responsibly are reasonably successful.

Keeping your children from the “dangers” of the world – sex, drugs, and rock and roll – is not educating them about responsible behaviour, but allowing them to learn irresponsible behaviour from peers and others who are not concerned for their welfare.

family_guy_stewie_drunk2.gifAs we see more and more campaigns to limit alcohol advertising, etc. in the name of the children, it is important to keep in mind that parents should be doing their job, rather than having the government do it for them. That doesn’t mean you have to let your children drink at home, if you do not think they should drink, but it does mean that you should broach the subject with them and educate them in the responsible use of alcohol.

Can’t Keep a Good Stripper Down

May 14, 2007

wine-003.jpgWell, Houston strip clubs are not going quietly into that good night.

Following up on a recent story, the Houston Chronic is reporting that strip clubs have a plan to skirt the ordinance which would prohibit them from operating within 1500 ft. of a school, church, park, etc.

To accomplish this goal, the strip clubs would become bikini bars; having their dancers wears tops, thus no longer being a sexually oriented business. Now, Capt. Steve Jett says:

“If they do, that’s within the law.”

Previously, these clubs, bookstores, etc. had been decried as dens of iniquity and fronts for prostitution. Yet, some how, if the girls wear a bikini top all that magically changes? No more prostitution will take place if it’s a bikini bar?

With bikinis, the clubs would be able to operate anywhere, subject to state alcohol regulations and local deed restrictions, city lawyers said. They also wouldn’t have to comply with other restrictions in the sexually oriented businesses ordinance, such as rules prohibiting close contact between entertainers and patrons.

So, close contact would be allowed. Sounds like the answer to the above questions is a resounding no.

The loophole would not apply to bookstores – obviously – but as usual, government has come up with an ineffective solution to deal with the supposed problem. If these businesses are really fronts of prositution, then enforce the laws against prostitution and shut them down. Covering up a tit is not going to stop the practice of prostitution.
